"Think Global, Act Local" has become the motto of Meredith McGovern's Classroom in the past year. Awarded a prestigious Teachers for Global Classrooms fellowship for the 2015-2016 school year, Meredith was introduced to the concept of Global Education and spent the month of March studying education in the Republic of Georgia. Throughout the fellowship, Meredith was captured by the idea that our classrooms should be flattened for our students so they can experience the world and become global leaders. In addition to being a TGC Fellow, Meredith was named the Louisiana Council for Social Studies Bossier Parish Teacher of the Year, Parkway High School’s Teacher of the Year for 2014-2015, and as one of Shreveport- Bossier's Top 40 Young Professionals Under the age of 40 for 2015. Meredith McGovern not only encourages her students to strive for academic excellence in the classroom, but also to leave her class with the knowledge that they can change their communities through volunteerism and civic participation. Through her membership in the Junior League of Shreveport Bossier, she gets to see firsthand how lives can be changed through volunteer efforts. In addition to community volunteerism, Meredith McGovern stresses the importance of civic participation to her students. As Coordinator of Parkway High School’s Presidential Mock Election in 2012, student’s role played presidential candidates, celebrities and state and local politicians to conduct a national convention/Electoral College reenactment for elementary and middle schools in the South Bossier community. Through this storied tradition at Parkway High School, students are exposed at an early age to civic participation. Meredith believes that being a teacher goes beyond the classroom walls and wants students to be a positive change for their community. Meredith is the wife of Patrick and mother to two young children, JP (age 9) and Addison (age 6), who both attend Sun City Elementary.
