Vince Lombardi on "Excellence"

"Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence."

Colin Powell on "Excellence"

“If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.”

Message from the Principal

Over the next three years, Parkway High School will be awarded $500,000 to improve student opportunity and student success through increasing Advanced Placement courses, providing intense professional development, and offering teacher and student incentives. I thank the National Science and Math Initiative (NMSI) for recognizing Parkway’s commitment in transforming our school to prepare students for success in College, Career, and Life by building strong foundations in STEM related fields of study, to include strong foundations in the English Language Arts…as each are intimately connected. Secondly, I thank the Department of Defense (DoD) for sponsoring this grant making what we have envisioned for Parkway students become a reality…their support will positively ensure our youth enter American society as public intellectuals able to compete in the global economy while supporting our Nation’s democratic credo as John Dewey would put it. Finally, I thank district administration under the leadership of Superintendent, Mr. DC Machen for supporting us in our efforts to move our school ever so closer to levels of excellence envisioned by all stakeholders.

Former United States Secretary of State, Colin Powell, once stated that “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, but a prevailing attitude.”  I believe it is the little things that we have focused on related to the intellectual and social growth of our students that has contributed to Parkway’s prevailing attitude of excellence.

As we enter the 2014-2015 school-year armed with the tools provided through this grant, our vision and passion to move still closer to conditions of “excellence” will be fueled by a spirit of competition and drive to achieve that which has not yet been achieved. With that said, we recognize the many challenges ahead as we enter the arena of educational reform marked by heightened levels of accountability, direct competition with private, charter, and virtual schools, as well as the task of maintaining public confidence in public school education; however, we feel confident that we can overcome these challenges by recommitting ourselves to the shared vision and by sustaining a prevailing attitude of excellence within our school community. I urge all to embrace this opportunity to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and to be an active participant in becoming what we are meant to become!

Warren G. Bennis on "Excellence"

"Excellence is a better teacher than mediocrity. The lessons of the ordinary are everywhere. Truly profound and original insights are to be found only in studying the exemplary."
