Photo of Superintendent and NSU President signing documentsWith the stroke of a pen, Bossier Schools Superintendent Scott Smith and Northwestern State University President Dr. Chris Maggio signed an agreement today that paves the way for high school students to attain a college education.

“Imagining the Possibilities” is an initiative between the two educational partners that will enable Bossier Parish students to earn college credit and the possibility of lucrative scholarship packages should they choose to attend NSU.

Students receiving a qualifying score on their ACT test or various Advanced Placement (AP) and College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams will receive academic credit at Northwestern through the “Imagining the Possibilities” initiative.

In addition, scholarship incentives will be made available to Bossier Parish students meeting academic criteria and enrolling in seven majors at NSU, beginning in fall 2018. Those include accounting, biology, business administration, computer information systems, engineering technology, education and nursing. Students interested in other academic areas may also qualify for scholarship packages.

As part of the agreement, the NSU recruiting team will be conducting visits at all Bossier Parish high schools to present the “Imagining the Possibilities” initiative to juniors and seniors.

“Bossier Schools consistently seeks every opportunity we can provide for our students’ academic success and this initiative with Northwestern goes hand in hand with that,” said Bossier Schools Superintendent Scott Smith. “We are eager for Bossier Parish students to take advantage of this initiative to pursue a college education and potentially save their families thousands of dollars.”

Photo of Parkway s Stock Market Challenge team membersParkway students in Barbara Curry’s civics class are showing the world just how much they know about business, the global economy and investing.

For nearly two months, 68 student teams throughout the state of Louisiana competed in The Stock Market Game ™ and were judged on their investing strategies and earnings from a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio.

When the game concluded, it was a trio of Parkway Panthers, led by Carter Roth (9th grade), Raven Calmese (10th grade) and A’jah Connor (9th grade), that placed second in the High School division in Louisiana, posting the greatest returns.

The goal of the 2017 Stock Market Game ™ is to help students learn the fundamentals of long-term savings and investing in a fun, engaging way. Students enhance their knowledge in core curriculum subjects including math, language arts and social studies, and they develop life skills such as financial preparedness, teamwork and business knowledge.

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Foundation, which sponsored the contest, points to an independent study that found students who participate score significantly higher on mathematics and financial literacy tests than their peers who did not take part.

Curry said she is especially proud of all of Parkway’s teams that competed in the statewide challenge. The winning team will receive T-shirts, certificates and be entered into a drawing for a trip this summer to Wall Street in New York, the financial capital of the world.

Congratulations to Parkway’s winning team!

The Parkway High wind ensemble has accomplished something no other Pride of Pantherland band before them has. The group of 67 musicians has been officially declared among the best in the land and selected as one of 26 bands nationwide to perform March 15-17 at the ‘Music For All’ National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis.

“Whenever I was telling my family, I was basically explaining to them how this is like the Super Bowl of bands, of high school bands. This is one of the most incredible honors we could have received,” said Madi Hines, a senior in the Pride of Pantherland Band. “I could not have planned a better senior year! I mean this has never been done before by the Parkway Band, so for me, to be able to grow in this band and then experience my entire four years capped off with this experience is just amazing and I am so excited!”

Band Director Mark Minton said he had been sending audition tapes for years to the selection committee for consideration. This go around, his persistence -- and the band’s hard work -- paid off.

“These people that are going to be at this concert band festival will appreciate the level of artistry that they have attained and I’m really excited about that and they’re going to feel like rock stars there,” Minton said.

The trip will not come cheap. It will cost $75,000 for the entire group to attend, but the Pride of Pantherland is $2,000 closer to getting there. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser made a recent stop to Parkway, where the band entertained him and he signed a proclamation commending the band for representing the state on the national stage. After hearing them perform, Nungesser pledged $1,000 toward their trip and Louisiana Senator Ryan Gatti matched it.

The band has also launched a vigorous fundraising campaign. A GoFundMe account has been set up, jewelry and holiday dinners are being raffled off and benefit concerts are being held. Check out this video, as well as media coverage, and go to #POP2Indy on Facebook to learn more.

Senior Cassidy Burrell, who plans to continue her musical aspirations in college, summed it up this way.

“It’s going to make me a better player so when I do pursue a future in music I’ll be able to enhance my music ability.” She went on to say, “I’m just really proud of this group. We’ve been through a lot and we’ve worked really hard, so I’m just glad that we have been granted this opportunity.”

Dozens of people stepped into cadence with members of the Parkway High School JROTC at the sixth annual La'Keia Rawls Memorial 5K to raise awareness and funds for domestic violence.

Following the run held earlier this month, the JROTC and members of Rawls’ family presented the proceeds to The Salvation Army. A check for $700 was given to help Carla’s Haven, which is the women’s and children’s family shelter at The Salvation Army.

Rawls was a graduate of Bossier High School who was killed in 2012 as the result of domestic violence. Lt. Col. Jon Johnson and his JROTC cadets carry on her memory each year by hosting the run.

The year keeps getting better for Parkway High School Band Director Mark Minton.

First, he learned his Pride of Pantherland Band was one of a select group chosen to perform at the prestigious Music For All National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis. Now, his colleagues from around the state have elected him the Phi Beta Mu Louisiana Band Director of the Year.

Minton was presented the award at the 2017 Louisiana Music Educators Association Conference. He was selected by his peers in the Louisiana Chapter of the fraternity, which is especially meaningful because it represents all middle, high school and collegiate band directors.

At a recent ceremony showcasing the band, Louisiana Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser singled out Minton for being named State Band Director and presented him with a letter of commendation.

Congratulations to Mark Minton for an honor that is well-deserved.

Bossier Schools received its report card today from the Louisiana Department of Education, which showed marked academic gains in the 2016-17 school year, earning it the designation as an ‘A’ ranked public school district.

An increase of 9.4 points bolstered Bossier Schools’ District Performance Score to 101.1 and an ‘A’ letter grade, reflecting Superintendent Scott Smith’s vision for different teaching practices and increased student learning over the past year.

Airline and Haughton High Schools also went up a letter grade, becoming ‘A’ ranked schools. Bossier High and Waller Elementary moved the needle as well and increased a letter grade; and Cope Middle, Plain Dealing High and Stockwell Place Elementary were named Top Gains schools, based on individual student progress.

Those schools that previously received and maintained 'A' letter grades for the 2016-17 academic year include: Apollo Elementary, Benton High, Benton Middle, Cope Middle, Kingston Elementary, Legacy Elementary, W.T. Lewis Elementary, Parkway High and Stockwell Place Elementary. Needless to say, this kind of news deserved a celebratory pep rally and the one held was like no other. Click here to see the photo gallery.

“I am excited beyond measure for our students and employees for the exhaustive efforts shown and outstanding job they did throughout the year amid sweeping curriculum changes and the academic performance bar being raised,” said Bossier Schools Superintendent Scott Smith.

“The School and District Performance Scores can be attributed to collaborative efforts at every level,” Smith continued. “Everyone at Bossier Schools is a piece of the puzzle, from teachers and students to administrators and support personnel. Credit must also go to our School Board representatives, who allowed us to do some very innovative things in the classroom to help ensure academic success. This is a great day for Bossier Parish Schools!”

Smith placed top priority on integrating Professional Learning Communities at each school and putting a mentor/mentee program in place to ensure every child has an adult they work with to chart their individual blueprint for academic success and personal best. A complete curriculum realignment was also implemented, changing the way the district teaches and tests students.

Earlier in the year, Bossier Schools claimed the sixth place spot for overall ACT composite score ranking in Louisiana and exceeded the state average in science scores by 10-percent on the 2017 LEAP proficiency exam.
